Recouping Your Cash after Christmas

Recouping Your Cash

Now that the festive season is truly over, we are all falling back into our regular daily routines. This means that one of the things we will be focusing more on now is our finances. Recouping your cash when you come back to work can be a scary sight to see.

The huge hole we burn in our pockets over the holidays becomes apparent once we check our bank accounts. It is something which can really be a pain for us to recoup. This is why we have a few simple January money tips for recouping your cash!.

Thankfully, now that I’ve gotten better at saving for Christmas all year, our January month is not QUITE as scary financially.

To check out how we do this using Qapital, read my post here!

Budget yourself strictly

It cannot be said enough how important it is to have a budget for your life in every aspect. From the food we buy to the data we use, it is important to live within our means and to set money aside.

Think about budgeting yourself a little more strictly this month to make up for the last few months of spending. For example, if you normally spend $100 on shopping, try to cut down to $80 by shopping bargains. Small changes like this can make all the difference to your wallet.

For some time now, I’ve been using Dave Ramsey’s Every Dollar website and app to budget and track our spending. It’s free and incredibly easy to use.

Simply tracking spending itself helped us spend less. Something about consciously logging each purchase actually helps you spend less.

Take on another job

If you want to make back a chunk of money, there are some simple jobs you can get from home. These will allow you to work in the mornings or evenings for a few hours and make some extra cash.

Take a look online at side jobs from home and you’ll be able to see a wealth of different options to suit many skill sets. Even if you only do this a few days a week it could make a big difference.

This is how I found VIPKid. I wanted a way to make some side income by working for just a couple of hours a day. It has been one of the best things I’ve done!

VIPKid is an online ESL program that allows you to be in charge of your schedule! Make $16-$22 an hour teaching at home!

Make use of big batch meals

In the winter one of the biggest expenses we tend to have is food. From gift baskets to boards of cheese this can become very costly very quickly.

After Christmas, you will likely have a lot of things leftover. If you have turkey in the fridge you can make some wonderful big batch meals. Big batch meals are great because they save money both by eating at home AND by saving energy. When you cook your meals in large batches, you cook less!

You could choose 1-3 meals for the whole week and live off them, hence having to buy fewer ingredients and spend less money. I just made a soup recipe that makes enough that we could probably eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a week. We freeze a lot of it and eat it throughout the week!

Find free entertainment

Now that the festive season is over you no longer have activities and dates planned in your diary, and if you have kids especially this can be a nightmare.

Children can be monkeys when they are bored and if you have no money to take them out it can feel like an impossible task to entertain them. Luckily, you can still do all kinds of free activities! Movie nights, trips to the library, and community events are great free options for family outings. It will be a great way to bond without having to dip into your wallet.

Avoid the sales

January sales are almost too good to resist… almost. Recouping your cash will be impossible if you are still spending like you are Christmas shopping.

It is much better to avoid the sales unless you NEED something because sales usually pull us into buying things we don’t need or really want.

Make sure to use cashback apps when you DO shop to try to save more! I really love Ebates for online shopping.

Really the best thing to do is to avoid overspending around the holidays altogether! As I mentioned before, my husband and I like to set money aside monthly for our Christmas budget using Qapital.

Find a way to prepare for the holidays that works for your family and keeps the holidays stress-free. When there is preparation before the holidays there is a lot less recouping your cash afterward!
