Making the Harry Potter Wands
Well, my husband got inspired again! This week he really wanted to make Harry Potter wands for the kids. The end result was so cool I had to share it!
As you know we’re a pretty geeky family! We love all things magical and/or geeky. Therefore we end up with a lot of posts like this one.

The kids always want to play with it when we watch Harry Potter. We’ve been on a pretty big Harry Potter kick lately so this led to my husband’s need to make Harry Potter Wands for the kids. He wanted us all to be able to play.
I must say they turned out really cool looking. The wands look very natural, and he even made a toddler-sized version! 🤣
This project did not take much! He used a stick from outside, a pocket knife, a handsaw, and sandpaper. That’s it!
Obviously, this wasn’t exactly a project that we could have the kids do. I’m sure there are more kid-friendly ways to make wands but we wanted them to be REAL (well, there’s no unicorn hair or phoenix feathers inside them, but we got pretty close to the real thing).
The Process
Max started with a really long stick and cut it to the sizes that he wanted. You’ll notice the placement of the knots in the stick are in a specific place on the wand. This why he started with a large stick so that he could cut it exactly how he wanted it and make sure those little knots and curves in the stick were where he wanted.
The knot in the stick was the top of the “handle” of the wand. Above the knot, he used his knife to shave off the bark and cut off the twigs. He then left the bark on the handle portion to give it a natural look and to match the style of Harry’s wand.
Then he sanded the wand down to smooth it all out! I really love the look that they have! Plus it didn’t cost any money!
Some of those Harry Potter wands can be expensive (I still kind of want them)!
I like them simply because you can buy the wands from the different characters, but that’s not really what I want to buy my kids.
These are made of real wood and will probably be more durable while my children smack the walls, the floor, and each other with them. I also don’t really need to worry about it so much if they DO break them. It didn’t cost us anything!
Why We Love Home-Made Toys
You might remember that my favorite toys are like this! Kids will play with a cardboard box or a stick, so LET THEM! Adults always feel like they need to buy the most expensive and flashy toys for kids or they won’t like them. The fact is, these are the toys that get forgotten quickest at my house. I realized very early on that it was better to make things out of sticks and cardboard.
Thankfully, I have a super creative husband who LOVES making things for his kids. Okay, let’s be honest, he makes them for himself too.
