I am so excited to write this post! Because going full time with VIPKid is really something I’ve been wanting to do. Every morning that I teach classes I have so much fun!
When I first started, my husband joked that I must really like it because he has never seen me get up at 4 in the morning, especially that happy. I was up, showered, dressed, and ready to go!
I am not the first brick and mortar teacher to make the switch, and there is a reason for that. Actually, there are many reasons! Here are just some of the reasons that I am leaving my brick and mortar teaching position and teaching English online full-time with VIPKid.
VIPKid is an online ESL program that allows you to be in charge of your schedule! Make $16-$22 an hour teaching at home!
Reasons I’m Switching to VIPKid
- Reason 1: One-on-one-Each lesson is with one student. You get to focus on what they are struggling with.
- Reason 2: Behavior-Let’s be real honest, here. The behavior situation in our schools has gotten OUT OF CONTROL. The worst part of it is just how absolutely powerless you feel… but that could turn into a whole other blog post, so we’ll just leave it at that.
With VIPKid, you still get to TEACH, which is what we, teachers, love to do. The focus is on that child’s learning. I actually just get to teach-none of the other stuff that gets in the way. You might get some kids that behave poorly, but the lesson is 25 minutes, and they are across the world. I can deal with a kid yelling and being crazy in his own house on a screen. Because compared to being actually afraid for my safety at my school, it’s nothing. In 25 minutes I get to say, “Bye, Bao Bao!” - Reason 3: Pajama pants for the win! Probably one of the biggest reasons to go full time with VIPKid is that as long as I’m wearing an orange T-shirt (literally a T-SHIRT) no one cares what pants I’m wearing (if any-ha just kidding… maybe…).
- Reason 4: Work from home-save gas, save money on clothes, no daycare. I will work in the mornings before the kids get up, then get to be with them during the day.
- Reason 5: Flexible Schedule-I choose which slots I open and which I don’t.
- Reason 6: Did I mention each lesson is only 25 minutes long? If there are issues with behavior, it’s a boring
lesson, or anything like that, I just have to hold out to the end of that lesson. - Reason 7: NO LESSON PLANNING. I cannot stress how LITTLE I prepare. Some teachers do a lot more prep than others. I do not have a lot of props and I do a lot of digital effects, so I really don’t do much preparation.
The lessons are already written. You are following a powerpoint and after doing it for a while you really get the hang of how the lessons work and flow. - Reason 8: NO GRADING- Right along with reason 7, one of the worst parts of teaching is the grading. I do not spend hours sitting and grading papers for VIPKid. The most I grade is during an assessment. But that is during the lesson.
- Reason 9: A company that listens-I probably could end up going on a rant here. So I won’t. I won’t talk about the negatives of how teachers are treated in schools, I will talk about VIPKid actually listens. They aren’t perfect, but this company is constantly asking for feedback and constantly trying to make themselves better. VIPKid uses research on language acquisition and
revise their lessons. They also take into account what teachers suggest. - Reason 10: Mobility-I am not a traveling VIPKid teacher, but there are a lot. Many people specifically teach online so that they can travel. As long as they have their webcam, their computer, and an internet connection they are set. Even though I don’t try to travel while teaching, it is really nice to have the option. We had a surprise trip recently for a death in the family. I didn’t want to cancel my classes so I just taught them in the hotel room. Unfortunately, I DID have to take PTO for my brick and mortar job…
There you have it! 10 reasons why taking a little hit financially is totally worth it for me to start working full time with VIPKid. The costs that we will be cutting will completely outweigh the stress, anger, sadness, frustration, hopelessness, and exhaustion that all too often comes with being a teacher. There may be a time where I am emotionally equipped again to take it back on, like when I first started. But for now, I’m ready to focus more on my own kids.

Maybe you don’t want to teach full time with VIPKid but need some extra money! The flexibility in scheduling makes this perfect as a side job. You could decide that you are only willing to do a couple of classes a day. Whatever you can manage!

What are the wages like? I am a College English Composition Professor and have looked at doing this, but wasn’t sure.
It is $14-$22 an hour. I make $20 an hour as long as I have more than 45 lessons in a month (I always do within a couple of weeks now that I’ve built up my schedule). I’m a certified science teacher and started blogging to hopefully be able to become a SAHM. Would they take me even though I’m science not English? The only thing really holding me back is we have really good insurance thru my job. I’d hate to lose that-so I feel kinda stuck.
YES! They would absolutely accept that. In fact, you don’t technically have to have a teaching degree. The requirements are a bachelor’s degree and ANY teaching experience (formal or informal). If you decide to do it, I would be happy to be your mentor. When I originally applied I was doing it for a side gig and was not planning on it being my real job. Now I’ve fallen in love with it so much!
