How to Choose Wedding Flowers

Choosing a wedding bouquet is a big decision. Real flowers? Fake Flowers? How many? Wedding flowers are often a huge stress in planning a wedding but looking over the different options can help you decide what you want for your special day.

Artificial Flowers

Artificial flower bouquets last a lifetime; they never lose their beauty or their quality. Fresh blooms, on the other hand, will die within a week or so. A lot of brides want to keep their wedding bouquet as a memento of their special day. You can dry your bouquet to keep as a memento but it’s not the same beautiful bouquet that you had on the day.

Of course, you can keep your wedding dress, but you cannot exactly display it in the house like you can with your flower bouquet. Every time you look at the stunning assortment of artificial flowers, you will be reminded of the most special moment in your life. Dried flowers just will not have the same effect.

Another Fun Keepsake Tradition: Use the tissue paper from your bridal shower gifts to create the “practice bouquets” for the rehearsal! Keep them as keepsakes. I still have mine (in picture)

Often Less Expensive

If you are trying to throw a wedding on a budget, then artificial flowers might be the way for you! Usually creating bouquets out of artificial flowers from a craft store will be much more inexpensive than purchasing real flower arrangements. Especially depending on the type of flower that you would like for your wedding.

Won’t Wilt Or Crumple on the Day

I remember with my wedding flowers, they were picked up the day of. We had to make sure they they did not get to hot. We were very careful with the boxes to make sure they did not get crushed or lose petals.

Artificial flowers, although you would be careful not to mess them up just aren’t as fragile. They can be outside on a hot day, and they will probably survive getting dropped or sat on.

Real Flowers

When I was getting married I knew that the bouquet and the few flower arrangements I did have, I wanted to be real. BUT I also knew I did not want a lot of flowers. My venue was absolutely beautiful and I often feel like many weddings start to look overly decorated. I felt that the building spoke for itself and I did not need to overdo the wedding flowers.

Because of this, real flowers were worth it to me. I was not buying a whole lot anyway and real flowers just looked fancier.

When choosing things for your wedding this is where you really need to consider what is important to YOU. Many people could not care less about having real flowers (or any flowers). That’s great! Save some money, honey!

For some having real flowers is special and important. If that’s the case, make sure that you are accounting for costs and care of the flowers. Where will they be stored? Who is picking them up? etc. As I said, we had to pick up the same day so this added to the things to do the day of.

The Classic Wedding Bouquet

When it comes to weddings, there are generally two types of brides. There are those that want to go for something unique and modern for their special day.

There are then those that ove for tradition, and so don’t stray too far away from the ‘rules’ when it comes to their wedding. Check out this wedding trends guide for a better understanding of both. If you fall into the latter category, you will certainly want to opt for a classic flower bouquet.

I would say that I was a little bit of both. I wanted my colors, but I also wanted roses. Classic and timeless!

Classic flower bouquets are white and green. They tend to consist of beautiful white flowers with green leaves. They look elegant, luxurious, and romantic. This is a combination that has achieved the elusive timeless status, and so you can be confident that you will never look back at your wedding photographs and wonder what on earth you were thinking.

One of the best ways to achieve the simplistic and clean quality that is associated with this trend is to group a single flower variety, although this is not a necessity.

There are a whole host of options you can go for when determining what flowers to incorporate into your classic bouquet. You could go for a white bouquet of lisianthus, dahlias, and hydrangea blooms. You could also mix mini gerberas with roses, or what about hydrangeas, cymbidium orchids, and roses?

The combinations are endless. This is also a trend that has long been popular with celebrities and the Royal Family. Kate Middleton went for the classic bouquet option when marrying Prince William. Other fans include Rochelle Humes and Khloe Kardashian.

Quick Tip to Save on Wedding Flowers

If trying to save on flowers, do what I did! We used the bridal party bouquets for the cake table at the reception after we finished the ceremony (see below)!

Ultimately, It’s Up to You!

Whatever you choose, make sure your wedding day is what you want it to be (affordably and without alienating other people). Make it special and place priority on what matters to you. If that’s not flowers, then don’t get hung up on flowers!
