As someone who has always been a teacher, Summer is a favorite time! I don’t particularly LOVE the heat, but I love not having to work and stress as much and to be home with the kids! Now that I’ve quit teaching, that’s my whole year and I’m so excited about it! It also makes me realize that I need to up my mom game and come up with some fun summer family activities to make the most of our time of good weather and no school!

Feeling the Summer Vibes

There’s nothing quite like summer. The weather is (mostly) fine, everyone’s (mostly) in a good mood, and there’s just oh so many things to do. And if you’ve got children, then the possibilities for fun are even more extensive.

Fun Summer Family Activities

Of course, you can always go to the zoo, go swimming and all of the normal summer activities, but if you’re like us, you might be trying to save money and need some good free or at home activities!

If you’re running low on ideas, then fear not — below, are some fun Summer family activities for you to refer to this summer!

Starting Easy: Your Yard!

Having outdoor adventures doesn’t necessarily mean leaving your property, especially for kids! There is so much to do right in your own backyard! Here are some fun summer family activities that you can do together outside your house!

Play in the Sprinkler

Or have a water fight! Playing in the water and Summer go hand in hand! Just a simple “watering the grass” sprinkler is really all you need for kids to have fun in the water during hot Summer days.

Go on a Bug Hunt

If you have kids like mine, bugs are the most fascinating thing there is! Some days getting to the car is extremely difficult because both of my children need to stop and look at every ant, fly, snail, or worm that we pass.

Try making a game to see who can find the most different types of bugs and insects! Or if you have older kids, take the good ol’ Google machine with you to look up all the different things you found!

Climb Trees

As a kid, loved climbing trees. We had a particular tree in our yard that I would climb with friends or take a book and read by myself.

Play Make Believe

Ok, who hasn’t gotten a really long stick and pretended it was a walking stick and you were out on an adventure. For geeky kids like me, I was Gandalf leading the hobbits and dwarves to the dragon.

Play Outdoor Games

Some families are more athletic than others. Racing or playing soccer might be what your family is into!

Blow bubbles

We recently got a bubble machine and it was so worth it! Bubbles are super cheap and keep the kids playing for so long!

Getting Creative and Learning

Summer is about relaxing, but you don’t want to forever be lying horizontally. Sometimes, you’ll need to be active, using both your body and your mind. For this, take a look at creative family projects.

Arts and crafts, for example, is an engaging way to spend an afternoon! With a few supplies, you can undertake plenty of projects. A good idea is to get a vinyl cutting machine from www.vinylcuttingmachineguide.com, and then look for project inspiration from the internet. You and your kids will love it.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts are fun for all ages. There’s really no end to the crafts you can do! Make up your own or find some ideas online!

Do some Science

Summer is the perfect opportunity to get some extra FUN learning in. The kids are out of school and science experiments and STEM activities are a great way to keep their brains active. Plus it’s fun!

Make Your Own Games and Toys with Cardboard!

You can create new summertime games out of cardboard boxes! It’s a great way to get creative together, then you take it outside for some more outdoor fun!

Rainy Day Fun

We hope that the weather is going to be bright and sunny all day, every day during the summer. But when has mother nature listened to our wishes? She plays by her own rules. We all know that there’s going to be rain at various points during the summer. When it does rain, make sure you’re still able to have fun by buying the right things in advance. Forget the personal devices — it’s all about those outstanding family board games, and movie marathons. Who cares about summer rain when you’re having so much fun indoors?

Outdoors Adventures Away from the House

We’re forced indoors more than we’d like to be during the autumn and winter. Therefore, it’s important that we make the most of all the outdoor opportunities that summer provides when the weather is fine.

Wherever you live, there’ll be plenty of beautiful nature spaces within easy driving distance. Visit a park or an arboretum in your area!
