As a parent, I find myself thinking about my children’s futures a lot. I just want to help them navigate their options as best as I can. There is so much out there. I have a savings account for their college started I looked up what to do with the money if they decide college isn’t the right path for their career choice, I just want them to be prepared! How do you guide your kid’s future without pushing something on them?
As soon as they’re born, you’re incredibly protective of your children and you’ll always want the best for them. This applies both today and for their future too. It’s often why parents are so invested in their kids schooling and interests. This is especially true when you feel that maybe you didn’t take the path you should have.
However, it’s not always that easy to know what the best ways to guide your kid’s future are. How can you ensure that you’re guiding them and aiding them in the most effective ways? Let’s take a look at things you can do to guide their futures today.
Keep An Eye On Their Interests
To start with, you’ll want to make sure that you’re watching their interests from a young age. This is so you can pinpoint where their strengths might lie, and then look to nurture them going forward. You can then put them into classes for sports, arts, academic stuff, or anything else to nurture that.
This doesn’t mean seeing that they have a knack for sports then pushing them into a sport and making their whole lives revolve around that one thing. I mean, what you seem to have a knack for as a toddler may not be what you will ultimately want to do with your life.
It just means that if you see your child interested in a specific subject or skill, it might mean something. Give them opportunities to explore their different abilities and interests!
Support Their Schooling
As much as people like to say that school doesn’t matter for your future, it does. Even if you THINK the job that you want has nothing to do with what you learn in school, school sets you up for success in the job field in other ways that don’t have to do with academics.
On top of that, supporting your child’s schooling and education is just one MORE way to make their options plentiful.
You won’t necessarily want to push your kids too much or interfere per se, but you will want to help them succeed in any way that you can. This means being supportive and available. Yes, you know that you want them to do well, but you have to know that this is their life and they need to put the work in, not you.
Encourage Their Activities
But you have to remember that this isn’t just about their education. If you want them to have a great life and enjoy their futures, then you will want to ensure that they indulge in activities that are going to make them happy and be fun for them too. So encourage them.
When I was a kid I was dancing in the living room one day with just as much passion and feeling that a little girl could muster, when I looked at my mom and said: “this is my heart out song!” My mom laughed and quoted for the rest of my life. I guess I had heard people talking about “dancing their heart out” and I had apparently felt that the current song was just the perfect encapsulation of this.
My mom put me in dance. Although I didn’t do anything with dance as a career, it has been something that has carried through in my life at different times.
Make Use Of The Summer
You’re also going to want to make the most of the summer too. Summer is the perfect time to get to do those things that their just isn’t time for during the school year.
Sure, they definitely deserve to have some time off over the summer, but it’s important to make sure that they complete any homework or summer assignments too. You could also look into extras for them like language or CT kids coding classes to help them. When they get extra classes over the summer, it helps them to stay engaged before heading back to school.
These extra classes or camps are also when they get to have more freedom in their learning! Summer is when they can explore their passions and interests more fully.
Work On Their Happiness
Finally, probably the most important thing to do for your kids is to think about creating a happy, loving, supportive environment for them. Sure, school is important, extra-curriculars are important… But really, feeling LOVED is one of the bigger indicators of a child’s future success.
Children who grow up feeling supported in their endeavors and loved unconditionally through failure will have the drive and confidence to get where they want to go in life. So above all, LOVE YOUR KIDS!
