Fun Things to Do With Your Kid on Valentine’s Day

As always, reading picture books together is at the top of the list! My list of fun things to do with your kid on Valentine’s Day must include reading a great book!

Find books that celebrate love and kindness! After all, isn’t that what we are celebrating on Valentine’s Day? Hearts and candy are nice but love is the best thing!

Love Big, by Kat Kronenberg, is a book about African animals learning how to love and share. As they treat each other with kindness, they grow into the animals they are meant to be (the rhino gains his horn, the lion grows his mane, etc). I was very fortunate to be given a copy of the book from the author’s publicist to share my thoughts.

The illustrations in Love Big are absolutely beautiful and my son loved the many times he heard the words “poop” and “poopy” when reading about the dung beetle! So there you have it, that makes it a winner right there!

The book is a lovely story that shows how being kind and loving others does not just help the other person, but us as well! Each time an animal showed kindness to another animal, something magical happened! They became better in some way, similarly to how being kind makes US better.

I love this book for Valentine’s Day and books like it because it’s important for our kids to learn that loving others and being kind are not just things we do on Valentine’s Day. Although we are celebrating it today, these are things that we do all the time!

Make Valentines for Friends and Family

One thing I remember doing as a kid is making valentines at home. I remember my mom showing me how you can fold a paper and draw just one half of the heart. After you cut it, it’s a nice, symmetrical heart for your valentine card! I probably made a hundred.

Things like this are so simple and fun. Kids can make them for their party at school if they go to school or for every one in the family. I remember making one for Mom, Dad, and each of my sisters. Then making one for the dog… All my relatives, etc.

Get really creative and make some fancy ones like these superhero handprint cards by The Best Ideas for Kids.

More Valentines Crafts

Crafts are a favorite for Valentine’s Day for sure! On top of making cards, one of the fun things to do with your kid on Valentine’s Day is to make fun heart-themed crafts!

As mentioned before, if your kid is in school, they will probably have a card and candy exchange in class. Instead of buying a box, make one together! Your child will love having their very own, one of a kind Valentine’s Box.

Last year, our son had his FIRST school Valentine’s Day party. He didn’t help to make his box this year but he got to pick what he wanted. He was obsessed with Spiderman and Iron Man, so Dad made it happen! Check out how cool his box is! One side is Iron Man and one side is Spiderman!

This year, Max made it a tradition and asked what kind of box he wanted.

Theron asked for a treasure box and, wow, Dad delivered! I am so impressed with my crafty husband!

This year, Theron helped draw the details on the box. He was BEAMING when he showed me his special box.

There are a million and one things out there to do! From simple to complicated, you can find all kinds of fun crafts for Valentine’s Day!
