Being able to help your child develop social skills is so important. If they don’t learn how to interact with others from a young age, they’ll really struggle when they start school. It will also be harder to develop good social skills when they’re older.

A lot of parents are worried about their child’s social skills since social anxiety has become an issue. Having poor social skills can affect so many aspects of your life which is why it’s important to help our children develop this skill.

There are a lot of ways to help your child develop social skills, but here are 4 very simple strategies that will help that skill naturally flourish!

Help Your Child Develop Social Skills - Encourage Play With Others

As you would have guessed, playing with other children is one of the best ways to learn social skills. It’s so simple! However, it’s increasingly difficult to get your kids to do this. The amount of time our kids are looking at screens is increasing drastically! But you need to find ways to keep them away from screens and get them to play outside with other kids instead.

The simple act of creating social opportunities for your child will encourage their social learning.

Get The Right Toys

Believe it or not, toys can play a part in our child’s social development! A lot of people don’t realize that playing with dolls and dolls clothes can actually help your child develop socal skills.

Playing with dolls and figures gives them an opportunity to practice conversation and interacting with other people. They can then use what they have learned when they are around other children. When children play with dolls or play house, they often model their play on interactions that they see daily. You might see your child playing mommy and telling her dolls to clean their toys up. They might even act out their favorite shows (meaning, the social interactions they see on TV is also very important!).

You should also try to get them toys that encourage social interaction like board games, for example. Any toys that require them to play with others are always a good choice.

Teach Empathy

Being able to understand how other people feel is such an important part of social interaction! Therefore, it is important to teach empathy to your child. You can do this by explaining certain situations to them and talking about how different people might feel.

For example, if your child has an incident with another child, ask them to think about how that child feels and why. Through talking about empathy, your child will start to learn how to have more positive interactions with people.

Lead By Example

Your children will take on your behavior and mimic it. (Remember the dolls?) It’s how they learn a lot of things, so you need to make sure that you’re setting a good example. Think about how you talk to people and interact in different situations. Your child will pick up on that and they will act in the same way. Are you impatient and demanding when things don’t go your way? Something to think about when your child is also impatient and demanding when you’ve told them no 🤷‍♀️.

That’s why it’s important for you to be sociable, especially when your child is around. Little things like having a good relationship with other parents when you pick up your child from school can make a big difference. So always be aware of the way that you’re interacting with others in front of your child.

We can tell our kids how to talk and interact with others all we want. However, when they have little opportunity to practice, they won’t develop the skills they need.
