We Are Geeks
When a Hobbit/Whovian/Narnian marries a Jedi/Dungeon Master/Hufflepuff it’s bound to make for a pretty geeky family. It’s no secret that we love fantasy in our house. From Hogwarts to Narnia to Middle Earth, we love adventures in a different world, so Christmas books that fall in line with that love are a must this time of year.
There are a ton of books that as a mom, I’m just so excited to read with my kids! One of my favorite memories of childhood was reading with my mom. My love of reading can definitely be attributed to these sweet times. I am working on my big list of books that every geeky family should read as a family, but with the holidays approaching I thought about what great Christmas books exist that are perfect for families who love fantasy and adventure!
Personally, I love the classics, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. I love their ability to create an entire world including a history, language, and culture! It truly allows you to just get lost in their work.
Here is a list of 5 great Christmas books for lovers of wizards and magic!
Christmas Books for the Geeky Family
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Although many might argue this should not be grouped with Christmas books, I like to read it around Christmas time, with snowy Narnia and a visit from Father Christmas. The parallel between Aslan and Christ and his sacrifice for us also makes it great to talk about the gift of Jesus Christ and why we celebrate Christmas.
All of the Chronicles of Narnia series books are amazing and I still read through the series at least once a year. They are the beginning of my love of fantasy and hold a special place in my heart.

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by Frank L. Baum
The creator of the magical land of Oz also wrote about Santa Claus! We don’t really do Santa as others do. We don’t teach our kids that Santa brings them presents (people who know and love them work to be able to give them gifts, and we teach them to appreciate that). But along with wizards and hobbits, Santa is a fun story of magic.
This take on the Santa story is much more fanciful than the usual story. Santa originates is an enchanted forest with other mythical creatures. Great for lovers of imaginary worlds with magical creatures!
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
This book is technically a sequel but can be read alone. (Get the full series HERE.) It is set at Christmas time and has the classic light versus dark with an adolescent hero plotline. Fans of Harry Potter will most certainly enjoy this book.
The story starts days before young Will’s birthday and Christmas. Will lives on a farm with his many brothers and sisters. He starts to notice something is wrong. The animals all seem afraid of him and he keeps catching a glimpse of a mysterious figure…
Will ends up in a quest to conquer darkness by finding the six magical signs that will assist in the battle between light and dark.
Christmasville by Michael Dutton
The first of a trilogy, this story is a sort of mystery! Mary Jane lives in the town of Christmasville where it’s always December or January. Something happens between January 31st and December first. Her town never changes, no one ages, everything is the same EXCEPT everything moves. Mary Jane seems to be the only one who notices. She is the only one who seems to know about other seasons and the existence of grass. She hatches a plan to figure out the mystery behind her town.
Probably good to read with your older elementary age kids, this story is a fun adventure to read around Christmas!
Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien
Are you surprised that Tolkien is are in here? Didn’t think so. OF COURSE, if there is a Tolkien Christmas book, it MUST be read by any fan of his work. This “book” is actually a collection of letters that Tolkien wrote for his children AS Father Christmas. I just think that this in itself is beautiful. Other characters appear in the letters as well and Tolkien’s amazing creativity shines in his letters. I love the sweetness behind them as well which makes them great to read with your own children.
The book includes illustrations along with the letters. There are stories of goblins, polar bears, and battles (
Each of these books is available as Ebooks for Kindle or Barnes and Noble Nook.

I absolutely ADORE Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising series - I agree with you about The Dark is Rising as a standalone, although I loved Greenwitch too. And I had no idea Tolkein had written letters to his children, that’s definitely one I’m going to track down as The Lord of The Rings is an all time favourite too. Great gift ideas, thank you!

Yes! I love Tolkien! The Hobbit has always been one of my favorite books. Once I learned about the Christmas letters I wanted them right away!
