Blogger Recognition Award Nomination

I’m excited to write this post that I was nominated for the Blogger Recognition Award!

What is the Blogger Recognition Award?

This award was created to allow bloggers to recognize and support other writers’ work. When you are nominated for this award, it means it is your turn to write a bit about your blogging background as well as any tips you have for other new bloggers!

I would like to thank Danielle of Piece Of Cake Parenting for nominating me. Check out her site! Her focus is on advice for parents of newborns, especially new parents. I recommend her post on Reversing Day and Night Confusion! She’s got great advice for helping your newborn sleep better!

A little about Purposeful Mommy

I have wrestled with the idea of writing a blog for a few years now. I never felt like I was qualified or interesting enough. I also was just always so busy as an elementary teacher. Every time I thought I would start, it just fizzled out. This year, my husband and I made a huge decision that I would quit teaching and become a stay-at-home mom. I thought, “Now is the time! I need to just go for it!”

I never thought becoming a stay-at-home mom was even possible for me. I have always been the breadwinner in our family. The idea of ME quitting my job was seemingly ridiculous. How would we survive?

I then start teaching online as a side job (Read about it here) and my mindset changed. I started to see that I could work from home and make a decent living! I could make enough that we would be OK! Now I’m making the switch!

I realized that there are probably other working moms who think that staying home is impossible or teachers who are where I was emotionally and just needed to get out but weren’t sure where to go or if they could do anything else. I definitely thought I was destined to just be a teacher my whole life because what else was I qualified for?

Purposeful Mommy was born out of my desire to be a mom who has vision and direction in her parenting. I am raising adults, not children. That is, after all, the ultimate goal as parents: to raise productive, high-functioning adults who no longer need you to be their everything. Although this is who I was as a working mom also, now I get to make it my full-time job, and I’m so excited about that.

Tips for new bloggers

Well I’m still pretty new myself, but I have been really fortunate to have a great start with a lot of great advice from other bloggers!

  1. Read! Read everything! Read other blogs; read more books. We become better writers by reading. It’s hard to know what your style is or what you want to do. Exploring a lot of different styles can help us find our way.
  2. Take as many courses as you can. Educate yourself on every aspect of blogging.
  3. Don’t be afraid to be different (or weird!). Chances are there are people who totally love it!
  4. Get out of your comfort zone (I’m still working on this). Putting yourself out there with your writing is hard enough. Then there’s the social media promoting! For many of us, this is uncomfortable. But it is very necessary for your blog to be successful.
  5. Be ready to commit. The first stage is going to be a lot of work. It will take a lot of time!
